Donald Wayne Shumaker Scholarship
Donald W. Shumaker was a journeyman plumber licensed in the State of Indiana. In this early career he was employed by Walt Stauffer, Bob Ehrman, and Mart Blakley plumbing companies. He also served in World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater.
In 1972 Mr. Shumaker joined North Side Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc. where he was respected for his knowledge and skill in the home repair area. When back surgery forced him to give up his work in the field, he transferred to North Side Plumbing’s over the counter sales department. Even in retirement he chose to work part time at the company.
Mr. Shumaker was a dedicated and dependable employee and an asset to the plumbing trade. He and his wife, Madeline, lived a quiet and frugal life. Upon their deaths, all monetary assets were left to charity, plus $88,000 was bequeathed to the Fort Wayne Area Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors, Inc. Mr. Shumaker’s employer, John D Hartman, was instrumental in the formation of the FWAPHCC and was active in the apprenticeship program of which Mr. Shumaker was very supportive.
On January 27, 1998, the Board of Directors of the FWAPHCC established the D. W. Shumaker Scholarship Fund to benefit the children and grandchildren of the Fort Wayne area member plumbing contractors, and the children of their employees, in the pursuit of a higher education.
